Livestock Marketers Elect New President

On January 22, 2015, the Livestock Marketers of Saskatchewan (LMS) held their Annual General Meeting at the Queensbury Convention Centre in Regina.

"This meeting is an opportunity for members to reflect on the past year and make plans for 2015. We have several new initiatives in the works for the coming year, including involvement in classes in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources at the University of Saskatchewan," stated Adele Buettner, LMS Executive Director. "In February and March, two of our directors will be presenting to students regarding marketing of livestock. As well as providing useful information, we hope to generate interest in careers in livestock marketing."

New to the LMS Board of Directors are Tyler Cronkhite, Cowtown Livestock Exchange; Pat Tellier, Saskatoon Livestock Services; and Ryan Rutledge, Assiniboia Livestock Auction. Stewart Stone, Heartland Livestock Services; Roy Rutledge, Assiniboia Livestock Auction; and Rhett Parks, Whitewood Livestock Sales were re-elected to the board. Stewart Stone was elected President.

"I'm looking forward to my new leadership role in LMS," remarked Stewart Stone. "As the organization that represents livestock auction markets, assembly yards and order buyer/dealer stations in Saskatchewan, we continue to work with government and other partners to address issues that affect livestock marketing. There are many opportunities for LMS to assist our industry with moving forward."

LMS promotes competitive bidding in the marketing of livestock by: establishing collaborative relations with industry partners; developing educational activities for members; and adhering to sound business practices and responsible animal welfare at members' auction markets. Saskatchewan has the second largest cow herd in Canada. Over 90 percent of the cattle marketed in Saskatchewan are sold through members of the Livestock Marketers of Saskatchewan.
